Brooklyn, August 2025 — A Weekend to Remember at 40 Acres & a Mule

Last Saturday, Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood transformed into a living museum of nostalgia and cinematic lore as 40 Acres & a Mule Filmworks—Spike Lee’s legendary production home—threw open its doors for a stoop sale that felt like a block-party time warp straight from the 1990s.

Fans flocked to the stoop at 75 S. Elliott Place to browse through rare posters, limited edition books, and one-of-a-kind memorabilia—many emblazoned with the iconic 40 Acres logo—while Spike Lee himself signed posters with his fierce, unmistakable energy. It was culture in action: personal, electric, and deeply rooted in community and storytelling.

But that wasn’t all. The energy from the stoop spilled over into theaters and beyond, as Today marks the release of Lee’s newest masterpiece, Highest 2 Lowest, a neo-noir crime thriller reuniting Spike Lee with Denzel Washington for the first time since Inside Man. Co-starring A$AP Rocky, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, and featuring a film-debut cameo by Ice Spice, this gritty reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low is a bold ride through modern-day New York—raw, moral, and pulse-racing.

The timing? Perfectly cinematic. As Spike signed memorabilia on the stoop, he was also launching a new chapter in his film legacy. Just days earlier, the Brooklyn Academy of Music hosted the star-studded premiere, where Denzel Washington—back in Brooklyn—stepped out on the red carpet with his wife Pauletta in tow to celebrate what many are calling their final collaboration.

In Highest 2 Lowest, Washington plays David King, a powerful music mogul caught in a life-or-death moral dilemma when his loved one is kidnapped. The film probes themes of morality, power, loyalty—and delivers in classic Spike Lee fashion, right down to the streets of NYC itself. Critics are calling it “a New York City love letter” and praising how Lee marries sleek suspense with soulful nuance.
